Jade Barrett
PhD student

Profile

I am an aspiring academic, focussed on issues surrounding farm animal behaviour, welfare and productivity.

I graduated from the University of Oxford, and achieved a 2.1 in Biological Sciences. Currently, I am commencing a PhD project at the University of Exeter, investigating social dynamics in dairy cattle and the implications for welfare and productivity.

I am very interested in the field of farm animal welfare – such research into farm animal welfare is hugely important since the predicted global population of 9 billion by 2050 may mean that welfare is forgotten, whilst production is intensified. I still believe however, that it is possible to maintain and even increase profitable production, whilst keeping animal welfare standards high, thereby working towards solving global sustainability issues.

Broad research specialisms:

  • Farm animal welfare
  • Animal Behaviour
  • Social networks
  • Behavioural ecology
  • Food security

Qualifications

Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences
