Project Title: Investigating the impact of traumatic brain injury on socioemotional processing in a young offending population

Project Description:

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in children and young adults. High prevalence’s of TBI have been identified in criminal populations, associated with violent crime and recidivism. In order to address this problem and target areas for intervention, we need to better understand mechanisms driving this effect. Socioemotional processing has been identified as a possible mediator in this relationship.

Based on preliminary findings from a study conducted during my MSc, there is suggestion that young offenders with substantial dosage of TBI are significantly poorer at recognizing emotional expressions in comparison to young offenders with no or mild TBI. This research PhD aims to build upon this preliminary research by running a replication study on a larger scale with young adults and investigating the relationship with neuropsychological functioning. We also plan to study these processes in members of the general population with TBI, systematically review evidence for facial affect recognition in violent offenders, and investigate the feasibility of running neurorehabilitative interventions in an incarcerated setting.
