Research interests

My main research interest is face processing and recognition. Recognising faces appears to be a straightforward task and indeed, we can recognise people we know well quite easily, even if we are presented with poor quality images of that person (e.g. CCTV footage). However, we are relatively poor at recognising unfamiliar people and even perform quite poorly when we simply have to match two images of an unfamiliar face. So it seems that we process familiar faces differently from unfamiliar faces, and my research is investigating what it is about a familiar face that allows it to be recognise so much better than an unfmailiar face.
