Project Title: Social Identity Theory and Sustainable Charitable Giving

Supervisors: Dr J.R. Smith and Dr T. Kurz

Funding Body: Private

Project Description: the research explores what makes people in the Middle East and Gulf States give to charity in a sustainable manner; what hinders their giving; and how to affect their decision to give and to make their giving sustainable, rather than one-off. The research is mainly divided into three main qualitative and quantitative research projects: collection of archival data of a natural disaster to determine patterns of giving; in-depth face-to-face interviews of high profile philanthropists from the Middle East and Gulf region; and an experimental phase based on the findings of the first two research projects in order to determine if decisions may be altered to increase sustainability of giving.
