Overview

I am the strategic group lead of the Clinical Psychology Research Group and the Mood Disorders Centre. I am also the Director of the MDC Biobehavioural Lab.

My research focuses on biobehavioural underpinnings of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and recovery from psychological trauma. I am also interested in translational clinical research about how our understanding of biopsychological processes and mechanisms can inform the development or refinement of psychological therapies for trauma survivors with PTSD and depression.

I received my research training in clinical psychology and behavioural neuroscience at Humboldt University Berlin, Germany. In 2001, I was awarded the Young Scientist Award of the Biological Psychology Division of the German Society for Psychology. After completion of post-doctoral research at the Center for Stress and Anxiety Disorders (CSAD) of the University at Albany, N.Y., USA, I have held faculty positions in Germany at the Technische Universitat Dresden and in the UK at the University of Southampton before joining the University of Exeter. I have published my research in leading clinical psychology and neuroscience journals and received funding from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation), Gerald Kerkutt Trust, Compassionate Mind Foundation and my PhD students were funded by ORSAS, ESRC, Wellcome Trust/Exeter Graduate Fellowships and Varela Award.

I also received five year advanced clinical training in Germany at the Institute of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Brandenburg and I am a licensed Psychological Psychotherapist (Approbation) and an associate therapist at the AccEPT clinic.
