About me:
Alex is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Queensland.
Previously Alex was Professor of Social and Organizational Psychology at the University of Exeter and a former Commonwealth Scholar at Macquarie University (Sydney) and Jones Scholar at Emory University (Atlanta).
He was an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Social Psychology from 1999 to 2001 and Chief Editor of the European Journal of Social Psychology from 2001 to 2005. He is a former President of the Psycholgy Section of the British Science Association and currently Treasurer of the European Association of Social Psychology. He is also currently on the editorial board of eight journals (including EJSP, PSPB, BJM, BJSP and Scientific American Mind).
His research focuses on a range of core social and organizational topics — including leadership, motivation, stereotyping, group conflict, stress and tyranny. This is informed by close collaborations with colleagues in Australia, Europe and North America. This is exemplified by his recent books The New Psychology of Leadership: Identity, Influence and Power (Psychology Press, 2011; co-authored with Steve Reicher and Michael Platow) and The Social Cure: Identity, Health and Well-being (Psychology Press, 2011; co-edited with Jolanda Jetten and Catherine Haslam).
In 2005 he received a Kurt Lewin award from the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology for outstanding contribution to research in social psychology. He is a fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and of the Association for Psychological Science.
Interests:
Organizational psychology. Work looks at the contribution of social identity and group membership to a range of organizational processes, with a particular emphasis on leadership and stress. This is exemplified by two key texts: Psychology in Organizations: The Social Identity Approach (Sage, 2004) and The New Psychology of Leadership: Identity, Influence and Power (Psychology Press, 2011, with S. Reicher and M. Platow).
Social psychology. Work explores issues at the heart of research into prejudice and and intergroup relations. Programmatic work deals specifically with topics of stereotyping, extremism, tyranny and resistance.
