Manuela Barreto is a Professor of Social and Organisational Psychology in the Department of Psychology. She studied Work and Organizational Psychology at the University of Porto, Portugal, and obtained her PhD in Social Psychology in 2000 from the Free University, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She led the University of Exeter’s Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences research strategy theme on ‘Societal and Lifestyle Shifts’ and was part of the University’s Athena Swan Working Group.
Professor Barreto is one of the Principal Investigators and a co-founder of the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health. Her research aims to better understand the social determinants of health and wellbeing, focusing on marginalisation, identity, and stigma, specifically on the impact of prejudice and discrimination on health, wellbeing, and social relationships. Professor Barreto is also interested in loneliness across the life-span, and the role of culture, identity, stigma, and life transitions in experiences of social (dis)connection.
