Dr Matthew Nielson
Lecturer
Psychology
Hi! I am Matthew Nielson, a lecturer at the University of Exeter where I am the head of the Gender Development lab which studies gender identity development across the lifespan. I received my PhD from Arizona State University in Human Development and completed research fellowships in the psychology departments at the University of Michigan and New York University Abu Dhabi. I focus on the socialization of pressure to conform to gender norms, the outcomes of acquiescing to or rebelling against this pressure, and how these processes might change over time. When not working on school things, I am generally cooking, running, or reading novels (tell him your book recommendations)!
I have space to accept graduate students with their own funding interested in pursuing an MSc by Research or PhD in social/developmental psychology and an interest in gender identity. I am also open to supporting students interested in these areas who would like to apply to the Commonweath Scholarship or other PhD funding scheme.
