Research topic: Intentional (top-down) control of language selection in bilinguals

My research focuses on examining the mechanisms that underpin the intentional (top-down) control of language selection in bilingual speech production and comprehension. Specifically, I focus on how bilinguals can effectively switch between two (or more) languages and to what extent this process is ‘costly’ or ‘cost-free’ in terms of the cognitive resources employed. In doing so, I aim to advance our understanding of bilingual language processing.

I use behavioural experiments that employ a 'cued language switching' procedure wherein participants name pictures of common objects in the cued language, with the target language repeating or switching unpredictably throughout the task. In additional to behavioural measures, I am also interested in using electrophysiological (EEG) techniques in combination with advanced machine-learning based analyses to examine how we prepare to switch languages.
