Stefan is a Lecturer in Social & Organizational Psychology at Exeter University, with an interest in the social determinants of health, well-being and teamwork and in particular how to develop healthy and supportive teams in healthcare and the military.

Before joining Exeter, Stefan worked at the University of Oxford’s Pandemic Sciences Institute, focusing on psychosocial care teams during high infectious diseases outbreaks in Uganda (e.g., Ebola, Marburg) and barriers for the implementation of clinical guidelines in LMICs.

Stefan was a Co-Investigator and Research Fellow on the ESRC-funded NHS COVID teams Study focusing on implications for leadership, team-working, career intentions and individual mental health of NHS personnel working at the frontline of COVID-19. Stefan has long experience working with the military, having taught military officers for 8 years at King's College London Defence Studies Department, where he also did his Ph.D. on cohesion, teamwork and leadership in a large exploratory study with the Royal Marines. He also accompanied various military units on military exercises overseas, and has been involved with military ethics training and devised leadership training for entrepreneurs. 

Stefan has completed a Ph.D. in Security Studies, an MSc in Psychology, an M.A. in Political Science and Political Science of South Asia, and holds a Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy. He has studied at King's College London, the University of Heidelberg, the University of Toronto, and the Shanghai International Studies University.

Research interests

My research interests are broadly in Social and Organisational Psychology, focusing on how social group membership can benefit mental health and improve teamwork.

    Rapidly formed Covid-19 teams in the NHS - Implications for leadership, team-working, career intentions and individual mental health. This UK-wide mixed method study aimed to understand the implications of working in Covid-19 frontline teams for leadership, team-working, career intentions and individual mental health.
