Connect With Us
Find out how to get involved with us in Psychology at Exeter.
Visiting Scholars
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences welcomes applications from academics who would like to work with us to enhance our work and research. Full-time members of staff at other universities in the UK or abroad are welcome to apply.
Visiting scholars may join us for up to six months. Those looking to stay longer may consider honorary appointments instead.
Scholars looking to join us will need to discuss this with an academic sponsor. They will then need to complete an application form and send this to their sponsor, after which their application will be considered within the department.
Visiting Students (PGR)
Visiting postgraduate research students are those who are enrolled on a postgraduate research programme elsewhere and wish to study or undertake research with us at the University of Exeter.
Those wishing to join us will need to receive agreement from the department Director of Postgraduate Research (DPGR) before applying. The student should apply through the PGR admissions portal applications as a “Other Advanced Studies (OAS)” student at least three months before the intended start date of the visit to ensure timely visa applications can be made.
Staff looking to find out more about this process may review chapter 16 of the postgraduate research handbook and the HLS guidance.
Widening Participation & Outreach
Our Psychology Department is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that actively welcomes, values, and respects students from widening participation (WP) backgrounds. We recognise that diversity enriches the academic community and enhances scientific learning, bringing a breadth of perspectives, experiences, and ideas that are highly valued in both academic and professional psychological practice. As research consistently shows, access to higher education is not equal for everyone. That is why we are dedicated to reducing the barriers that may prevent talented individuals from entering and succeeding in the field of psychology.
Most of our WP activities are led by academic staff who are passionate about inspiring and supporting the next generation of psychologists. Thanks to the Department’s broad expertise, previous events have included lectures and hands-on sessions in areas such as clinical psychology, social psychology, animal psychology, and more!
Our Exeter Scholars programme offers attendees firsthand insight into studying psychology in our department. In addition to Exeter Scholars, we run a wide range of on-campus and online events and workshops to engage even more students from WP backgrounds. These cover topics such as neurodiversity, specialist psychological techniques, and career planning in psychology. Previous participants have gained valuable, supervised experience in activities, such as running an electroencephalography study and conducting fieldwork in animal research on campus.
Our work experience scheme has been designed to support students facing greater disadvantage or underrepresentation in the psychological sciences. This initiative provides structured placements, mentoring, and skills development, helping students gain practical insights and valuable workplace experience. By prioritising those who may have limited access to professional networks or opportunities, we aim to level the playing field and enhance the employability and confidence for individuals most likely to be disenfranchised in the professional and academic world.
Through all our WP efforts, we aim to nurture scientific curiosity and academic success in an environment where every student, regardless of their starting point, is respected, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
