Elena Dimitriou
PhD Student

Profile

I completed my first degree in Thessaloniki, where I studied Psychology with a specialisation in Clinical and Social psychology. During my first degree I completed a year as an Erasmus student in the Netherlands, at Radboud University of Nijmegen, where I studied Gender, Sexuality, and Feminism.

Furthermore, I have been a volunteer for Devon Rape Crisis and Sexual Abuse Services since 2012, supporting women who have experienced sexual violence.  I’m also on the planning committee for the Reclaim the Night march, an event that raises awareness about violence experienced by women on the streets at night.

Broad research specialisms:

My main interests lie in the field of sexism, discrimination and confrontation. I started working on sexual harassment during my MSc here at the University of Exeter, when I conducted research into the effects of workplace sexual harassment on female employees’ relationships. After completing my MSc I worked as a Research assistant for Professor Manuela Barreto, exploring a variety of issues such as workplace sexism and sexual harassment.

My ESRC funded PhD research project focuses on sexual harassment complaints procedures. Under the supervision of Professor Manuela Barreto and Professor Thomas Morton, I aim to explore the options that are available to people who have experienced sexual harassment, how people decide which path to take, and the different effects of going down each avenue.
